Dylematy #2 - czy w angielskim istnieje słowo 'czy'

whether vs. if 

Pytanie, które ostatnio zadał mi jeden z czytelników brzmi: czy jest różnica pomiędzy if i whether (w pytaniach zależnych)? Zacznijmy od samego terminu 'pytania zależne'; najprościej tłumacząc są to pytania ogólne (czyli takie, na które można odpowiedzieć tak albo nie) zamienione na zdania podrzędne jak w poniższym przykładzie. 

pytanie ogólne: 

Would you go to the cinema with me tonight, darling?

pytanie zależne (nie-bezpośrednie, albo nie wprost): 

I wonder if/ whether you would go to the cinema with me. 

Whether albo if można używać zamiennie w takim typie zdań; 

It doesn't really matter whether/ if you use 'if' or 'whether in this  type of sentence. 

Jedyna różnica to taka, że 'whether' jest rzadziej używane (zapewne z powodu swojej długości); przegrywa w konkurencji z króciutkim i zgrabnym 'if', jak to zwykle bywa to, co jest rzadziej używane, czyli nie na codzień, ale od święta, nie jest kolokwialne, a skoro jest nie kolokwialne jest więc formalne. 

Sprawa się bardziej komplikuje, gdy pojawia się przyimek, bezokolicznik lub zdanie podrzędne stanowi podmiot, dopełnienie. 

• Jeśli przed zdaniem podrzędnym pojawia się przyimek, nie używamy if (bo używamy whether). 

                        We had a big argument about whether we should go out tonight (or stay at home). 

• Jeśli chcemy użyć bezokolicznika, to używamy ... zgadnijcie co?

                       Whether to be or to have is a serious question that has been bothering me for some time. 

                       Chamlet posed an odd querry whether to bite the dust or not to bite the dust. 

• Jeśli zdanie podrzędne staje się podmiotem lub dopełnieniem (jak to?). 

                       Whether he will live (or not) to the end of the act to find the answer is another matter.

                       The question is whether he has sense to answer it. 

         

          Od biedy można użyć if w bardzo nieformalnym stylu (pod warunkiem, że nie pojawia się 'or not')

                      The question is if the man needs to undergo mental treatment. *

• Z powyższch przykładów wynika, że wszędzie tam, gdzie pojawia sie 'or not' należy użyć 'whether'. 

                      There is a clash of opinion whether I should stay or go. 

• Jeśli zdanie podrzędne wstawimy na początku, koniecznie musimy użyć 'whether'. 

                     Whether I should finish this post here and now, it still hasn't been decided.
